Ask HN: Cheaper Alternatives to Kagi?

I'm at a breaking point with Google. The search results have become so damn mediocre that I just can't find what I want anymore.

Have tried DDG and the results are mostly the same as Google.

Kagi is the best for my use case, but its just too expensive for the family plan. I live in India and with everything, it's like INR 1800, which is more than my home wifi, netflix, and phone combined. Really hard to justify paying that much

Does anyone have a cheaper alternative they would recommend?

Well you can get a non-family plan, do you really need to pay for 6 people? Plans start at $5 for 350 searches, or $10 for unlimited.

INR 1800 is about $22 USD? Wow, that's incredibly cheap for wifi, phone, and Netflix.

I pay about $80 for wifi, $50 for phone, and $20 for Netflix. That's about INR 12,500.

International pricing is always fascinating to me. Wonder if Kagi will offer regional pricing.

yeah, it's about INR 499 for Netflix, INR 650ish for two phones, and INR 699 for home wi-fi

Netflix is the most expensive of all streaming services. I remember getting Disney+ for like INR 1200/year (about INR 100/month)

Semi off topic, but what happened to this website, used to be the top result when searching for services, now even when I search alternative to x it often won’t be on the first page.

I use to trust it, have it as my go-to for 'alternative to'. At some point it became ridiculous. I would ask for an (e.g.) "antivirus software" and it would drop me a list with irrelevant security-related software. I think that their need to be helpful harmed the quality-vs-quantity ratios. I stopped using it and now I 'ask' Gemini for 'alternatives' to. I find it to give me more accurate results. Sometimes it suggests software/products that are retired or acquired (M&A). But still it will give me 90% good results instead of the 30% 'alternative to' website results.

As a recent Kagi subscriber who switched to Whoogle, I don't see any drawbacks.
