First time I see this written as “for high end products”. They’ve been pushing this idea for a while now.

If they make this the norm for them, they’re going to lose the whole self hosting / docker enthusiast crowd. And all the SEO that comes with it.

That's $37 of pure profit, per drive - and you'll usually have at least 2 drives. Synology's NASes start about $260 without drives. I'd wager they'll make more profit on the drives than they do on the NAS.

So we've come full circle. This was common practice in the 90's with companies like Dell, HP, etc. with HDD's, memory, etc.

Synology must feel quite confident in their market dominance if they think they can pull this off.
