Prepaid Lightning tokens as API keys for AI agents

We built LightningProx to pay for AI APIs over the Lightning Network.

The original model (invoice per request) was correct but unusable for agents — every call required human payment intervention.

Last night we shipped prepaid spend tokens: POST /v1/topup with an amount, pay one Lightning invoice, receive a capped + expiring token, and use it as an X-Spend-Token header until the balance runs out.

No accounts, no custody, no long-lived credentials.

We also open-sourced an MCP server so Claude Desktop, Cursor, and other MCP-compatible agents can manage payments autonomously.
