This isn't malicious compliance. It's over-the-top compliance. He has no requirement to comply with their random demands. He does anyway.
Unless you're at the business end of a mix up in which case you might smoke the first guy through the door in a hope they pull back and re-group and you leave with your life it's generally unproductive to meet them with force.
